Construction of Golghar for storage of grain

The British built the Golghar for the storage of grain. Over time, Golghar became the identity of Patna. Every person who comes to Patna wants to see Golghar first.

Governor General Warren Hastings was advised on 20 January 1784 by JP Oriel, a merchant of food grains, to build a large granary.

Hastings was looking for a permanent solution to the famine of 1770. More than one million people died in that famine in Bihar, Bengal and Dhaka.

Captain John Garstin was given the responsibility

Warren Hastings entrusted the construction of Golghar to Captain John Garstin, an engineer of the Bengal Army. For the construction of Golghar, Garstin had set up his camp in Bankipur.

The Bungalow Garstin Sahib of that time is the present day Bankipur Girls High School. Let us tell you that the 236 year old Golghar was built on 20 July 1786 near Gandhi Maidan in the capital Patna.

The Golghar was built in just two and a half years. The size of the Golghar is 125 meters and the height is 29 meters. The walls of the Golghar are 3.6 meters thick. It can hold 140,000 tonnes of grain at a time.

Many flaws in the construction of Golghar

It is said that only after it was made, flaws started coming to the fore. Its doors open inwards. Because of this, it can never be filled completely. The second drawback is that due to the heat, the grains in it rot quickly.

So the purpose of making it could never be fulfilled. There was never any grain collection. Then the British called the flaws in its construction Garstein's stupidity. Despite this, Golghar is quite popular.
